What's the difference between vented and vent free Grand Canyon logs?

Vented logs need an open damper and a working flue, and vent free logs need neither. The open flue on a vented set is what produces a taller, more realistic flame, since combustion byproducts exit outdoors instead of staying in the room. A vent free set instead relies on an oxygen depletion sensor that shuts off gas automatically if oxygen levels drop, making it safe to run without a chimney. Grand Canyon's Canyon Series burners are dual certified to both ANSI standards, so the same build quality applies to either one.

Is it safe to run a vent free gas log set with the damper closed?

Yes, that's the whole point of a vent free set. Closing the damper keeps the heat in the room instead of losing it up the flue. The oxygen depletion sensor still monitors room air continuously, shutting gas off before oxygen drops to an unsafe level. Local codes set minimum room size requirements for vent free installations, so confirm your space qualifies before you buy.

Can a Grand Canyon log set be converted from natural gas to propane?

Yes, but the burner's orifice has to be swapped, not just the regulator or valve. Propane runs at a higher line pressure than natural gas, so each fuel type needs its own orifice size to burn correctly and safely. Order the correct conversion kit for your specific burner model rather than reusing parts across fuel types.

How long do Grand Canyon gas logs hold their color before fading?

Most sets hold their hand painted finish for 15 to 25 years before noticeable fading or surface chipping sets in. That range comes from the multiple paint passes and proper kiln firing each log goes through during manufacturing, not a single sprayed coat. Direct sun exposure and outdoor weather cycling tend to push a set toward the shorter end of that range.

Do outdoor Grand Canyon gas logs use a different burner than indoor sets?

Yes, outdoor rated sets use a 304 grade stainless steel burner pan instead of the standard indoor burner material. That grade resists the corrosion that rain, humidity, and temperature swings cause over time in an uncovered or semi covered installation. The Weather Beater ignition option adds flame sensing technology on top of that, so the pilot relights on its own after wind gusts blow it out.
