- Storm collar: an adjustable band positioned directly above the plate that stops rainwater from tracking down the annular gap between the pipe skin and the flashing neck. That gap exists on purpose, to let the hot pipe expand without binding against the flashing.
Order the collar alongside a matching chimney flashing plate so both pieces share the same pitch and diameter rating. A collar sized for a different flashing neck diameter either won't clamp tight or will crush the flashing cone trying to.
How Do You Size a Collar to Your Pipe?
Sizing starts with the exact outer diameter and joint design of your exhaust system, not a rough estimate. Even a small mismatch defeats the purpose of the collar entirely.
- Diameter fit: on Class A chimney pipe, the band has to draw down firmly against the outer casing without deforming the pipe wall underneath. That means checking the manufacturer's diameter spec rather than eyeballing the fit.

How Is a Storm Collar Installed and Sealed?
Installation follows a fixed sequence. Doing the steps out of order is the most common way a new collar still leaks.
The band slides down the pipe until it rests roughly half an inch to an inch above the flashing cone's top lip, positioned so its lower edge overlaps the cone rather than sitting flush against it. A tension bolt or tab latch then tightens the band until it grips the pipe wall firmly, without over-tightening to the point of deforming a thin-wall pipe.
The final step, and the one most often rushed, is running a continuous bead of high-temperature silicone around the top rim where the collar meets the pipe. Smooth it so it sheds water instead of pooling in a ridge. A collar installed correctly but left unsealed, or sealed with an ordinary exterior caulk instead of a high-temperature RTV product, will fail at the seal well before the metal band itself wears out.
What Storm Collar Materials Are Available?
Storm collars are typically stamped from either stainless steel or galvalume, the same two materials used for most flashing plates. Both hold up under repeated heating and cooling at the pipe surface, and that's why.
Stainless steel resists corrosion better over the long run, making it the standard choice in coastal or high-moisture climates.
Galvalume's zinc-aluminum coating breaks down faster under salt exposure in those settings. Galvalume costs less and performs perfectly well in most inland residential settings, which is why it remains the more common option nationwide.
Whichever material is chosen, it should match or complement the flashing and pipe material below it. Mismatched metals in direct, damp contact set up a slow galvanic reaction that pits the less corrosion-resistant of the two over years of exposure.
What Are the Warning Signs a Storm Collar Is Failing?
A failing collar rarely announces itself with an obvious leak right away. The earliest sign is usually a hairline crack or gap in the silicone bead along the top rim. It's visible on close inspection but easy to miss from the ground.
A loose collar that shifts slightly when nudged by hand has likely lost its grip on the pipe through repeated thermal expansion and contraction, even if the metal band itself shows no visible corrosion.
Rust streaking down the flashing plate below the collar is a strong indicator that water has already been tracking past the seal for some time. That staining pattern doesn't happen from surface rain alone.
Any of these signs is reason enough to replace the collar and reseal it, rather than waiting for a confirmed leak inside the structure. The cost of the part is minor compared to water damage inside a wall or ceiling cavity.
Is a Storm Collar Necessary If the Flashing Is Already Caulked?
Yes, and this is one of the most common points of confusion for a first-time buyer. A flashing neck that looks tightly caulked around the pipe can still fail. The caulk is applied directly to two surfaces, metal flashing and metal pipe, that expand and contract at different rates every time the appliance runs.
That constant flexing eventually cracks even a well-applied caulk bead, usually within one to three heating seasons depending on climate and how hard the appliance runs.
A storm collar shelters that joint from direct rain, snow, and UV exposure instead of relying on the caulk alone to hold a permanent seal. It functions as a physical shield, not just another layer of the same sealant approach that already failed once.
Skipping the collar because the flashing was caulked at installation is a common cost-cutting shortcut. It shows up as a callback leak within a year or two.
Does a Storm Collar Affect the Chimney's UL Listing?
Yes, in the same way that flashing and pipe brand matching does. Storm collars sold as part of a certified chimney system are tested alongside the specific pipe and flashing they're paired with.
That combination is what earns the assembly its UL listing, rather than any single component being independently certified. Substituting a generic, non-matched collar, even one that appears to fit, technically installs the system outside its tested and listed configuration.
That can complicate an insurance claim or a home inspection down the line if the mismatch is ever identified. This is a narrower concern than a safety issue in most everyday installations. But it's worth knowing before assuming any stainless band of roughly the right diameter is an acceptable substitute for the collar the pipe manufacturer actually specifies.
When Should an Old Storm Collar Be Replaced?
Worn or corroded bands are a routine maintenance item, not a one-time install. A south-facing roof section in a hot climate breaks the silicone bead down faster than a shaded northern slope, since UV exposure and thermal cycling both accelerate at higher surface temperatures.
Sourcing a replacement from the same fireplaces hardware line as your original pipe keeps the tolerances matched. That matters more with a storm collar than almost any other chimney component, since its entire job depends on a tight mechanical fit.
